What is the Coastal Storms Program?

The Coastal Storms Program is a nationwide effort led by  NOAA to increase mitigation efforts and reduce the risk associated with coastal storms. The program brings together a variety of federal, state and local organizations with the purpose of reducing loss of life and negative impacts on coastal property and the environment caused by coastal storms. Project areas are located in the Great Lakes, northeast Florida, Pacific Northwest, Southern California, Gulf of Mexico and Pacific Islands. Projects are selected based upon needs of the community and the capabilities of NOAA and its partners to meet those needs.

Coastal Storms Program in the Great Lakes

The Great Lakes basin is a dynamic system, made up of highly diverse habitat and species. Beach hazards and stormwater pollution from severe and frequent storms make protecting coastal communities a unique challenge. The Great Lakes projects are targeted to improve weather observations and projections, as well as communicate information more effectively across the Great Lakes region. Collaboration between various partners is being conducted to effectively address dangerous currents and improve shoreline mapping and planning, as well as implement shore-based weather observation platforms. Additionally, projects are focused on reducing the impact of storm water toxicology on aquatic resources.

Various projects have been conducted, such as shoreline management workshops, buoy observations and ecological assessments.
