NOAA's Role in the Great Lakes Restoration Initiative

The Great Lakes Restoration Initiative is the largest investment in the Great Lakes in two decades. The Great Lakes provide drinking water to over 30 million Americans and support a multi-billion dollar economy, making the restoration and protection of this ecosystem a national priority. A task force of 11 federal agencies developed an Action Plan to implement the Initiative. This Action Plan covers fiscal years 2010 through 2014 and addresses five urgent issues:

  • Cleaning up toxics and toxic hotspot “Areas of Concern";
  • Combating invasive species;
  • Promoting nearshore health by protecting watersheds from polluted run-off;
  • Restoring wetlands and other habitats; and
  • Working with strategic partners on outreach and providing accountability through measures of progress and benchmarks for success over the next five years.

Of the $300 million appropriated in 2011, NOAA has 18 major projects totaling $17.5 million. Click on one of the icons below for more information about NOAA's activities in a particular focus area.
