North Atlantic Region

NOAA’s North Atlantic Regional Team has identified 13 separate projects in our FY14 workplan. These projects are in direct response to regional drivers like Sandy recovery and President Obama’s Climate Action Plan, offshore wind development, groundfish management, landscape-scale conservation and sequestration impacts on water gaging networks. NOAA staff got a tour of NRT-5 at the Rhode Island roundtable with staff of elected officials.

One highlight from the plan is a region-wide effort to raise awareness of NOAA products and services that are of critical importance to coastal communities.  In December, the NART sponsored a roundtable discussion on the theme of coastal preparedness for staff of elected officials in RI at the University of Rhode Island Bay campus. There were 27 total participants, including representatives from Senator Whitehouse, Senator Reed, Representative Langevin, Governor Chafee, and the RI Dept of Emergency Management. Presentations were done in cooperation with end users to illustrate the value of NOAA products and services to their Rhode Island constituents. Topics included the Rhode Island Beach Special Area Management Plan; the science of extreme events and impacts to Rhode Island; a demo of the Physical Oceanographic Real-Time System for Narragansett Bay; update on new NowCOAST capabilities; potential applications for a web-based post-storm documentation tool called Storm Reporter; and a tour of Navigation Response Team-5′s vessel. Other NOAA representatives participated in a lunch with participants which included informal, remarks on fisheries research, restoration center activities and ocean exploration.
